Thanks for all the interesting information! So 'Smack' for heroin would derive from the impact it has on the consumer?

I thought "smack" was called that because, once you've tied off the upper arm, you hit (or smack) the forearm to bring the blood vessels to the surface.

Interestingly, "scag" used to be used to refer to cigarette butts. Does anyone know how it has come to be a synonym for heroin?

Even Eric Partridge doesn't seem to know; he records 'scag' for heroin, specifically uncut heroin, as being current in Canada and the U.S. c.1970, and merely has it as 'derived probably from earlier US slang, scag/skag= a cigarette or its butt, of unknown origin'.

Heroin is also the beast, the big H, the boy, Chinese No. 3, gold dust, dog food, Henry, horse, junk and schmeck (amongst probably a lot of others). Heroin hidden in the cover of a matchbook is referred to as quill. A speedball is a mixture of heroin and cocaine, and a Frisco speedball is the same mixture with added LSD. Inhaling heated heroin is known as kicking the gong around.

What's the difference between that and smoking the dragon?

On edit - that should be 'chasing the dragon', shouldn't it?

I know "scag" is used for an unattractive female.

I spent about 7 years working with regular users in Adult Education. The main thing I noticed was that they would apply cool sounding words to their habits- based presumably on the fact that they have a need to make their usage sound acceptable- even to one another.

Examples are things like syringes being called 'spikes', various drugs being referred to as silver, gold, gear, kit- the list goes on and on.

There are also local deviations of more universal nicknames, what much of the rest of the world seems to call 'blow' (definately cannabis), in Scotland is 'blaw'. It goes beyond an accent- ask many users about blow and they don't know what you're on about. They spell it b-l-a-w.

I would imagine the term 'Chasing the Dragon' is another coolism, but its basic meaning is that, the first time Heroin is injected (and it applies only to injected, not smoked) the high is supposedly the most amazing feeling a human can have. This is the Dragon. It can never be equalled but it can be chased.

Therefore, every time a user injects they are chasing the dragon.

With regards some of the other stuff, I don't know where things like the term smack comes from, but I would imagine words like 'schmek' are just local derivatives of this that have taken hold- drug use is a land of euphemisms and the terms will change with fashion and presumably the need for some level of anonimity.

I think that chasing could also come from the apparent sensation of a buzzy sort of pulse that travels around the body and then sits in your head for ages. Apparently. going 'vvvooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooomdulllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllbuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz'

Chasing the dragon I've heard used in reference to staying on the acid for more than one hit without a rest. Hits last 12 hours or so, taking more or lessjust effects the strength.

Aparently it doesn't have much effect apart from a horrible sick feeling that Acid aparently causes. I'm told that this is something to do with the effect of acid being to do with the eyes shaking, but I wouldn't take any of that as gospel.

When one takes "Special K" the metaphorical place you visit is called a "K Hole".
LSD is nicknamed Lucy (in the sky with diamonds)
Opium is O (surprisingly)
Cannabis is puff (the magic dragon?)

The K-hole is what happens when someone overdoes the k and ends up comatose for a bit, unable to move or interact with reality. Don't do k kids.

Yes, not fun! I agree, don't do the Special-K diet!

I heard the term disco biscuits as a term for ecstasy tablets.

Also found it quite interesting that one of the ingredients in cannabis may be able to slow the effects of alzheimer's. I wonder in some ways if in many years to come, under suitable regulation it might be hailed a brain wonderdrug...

It would be quite ironic considering the level of effect, it has on the youth of today. Many years of over-use of super strengthened unregulated marijuana crop's by a large percentage of the youth of many countries.

With regards long term effects, lots of the lauded outcomes are guesses to a certain extent. Taking E's as an example, there have not been regular use for long enough to know just what the effects may be.

I am in my mid 30's and use of Ecstasy grew during my teen years (I tried it a few times myself- along with cannabis, cocaine, Acid, Speed, Mushrooms etc). Although it was not new it is the first time that mass use of the drug existed. Some of my friends the same age as me are still regularly using the drug and are probably the guinnea pigs for the rest of time (I, on the other hand, tried whatever I could for about 6 months, then got bored and decided to go climbing and have a beer or two in the evenings- the company was better.)- we'll see what 15 years of E does in due course...

As for cannabis, there are now proven health uses- pain relief being the most common, but the main problem is that cannabis has 9 times more tar than tobacco, so this may outweigh it's benefits unless medical science can produce it as a tar free medication.

I like the term disco biscuits! Just now the most common term I hear for Ecstasy are things like Sweeties, Pills, Tablets etc.
