I'd love to see a fairly comprehensive evolutionary tree diagram of the top 200 (say) animals, explaining which are their nearest relatives, what they evolved from &c. I often read amazing facts such as "the elephant's nearest relative is the rabbit" or "humans are evolved from starfish" &c but I'd love to see what else derives from what. Any suggestions? Doesn't need to be web based.

"top 200"?

By what criteria exactly are you proposing the animal kingdom should be ranked?

Interestingness and importance I'd assume.

Hmm, both extremely subjective criteria I'd say.

And the problem with that would be what exactly?

Using subjective criteria is bad if you are performing an investigation on a theory, or placing a species correctly within the taxonomic system; howver, here we are trying to create a family tree of interesting and important species throughout history, so I'd say they are bloody good criteria.

Yeah, we don't really need a diagram where the Elephant evolved from The Very Nearly An Elephant But We Can Tell, it isn't as interesting. I remember seeing something like this done for horses that charted them from when they had paws (And were excessively cute, it seems).
