Bestiality

George Spencer lived in Connecticut in its Puritan days, when bestiality was a capital offence. Three circumstances conspired against him: he lost an eye in a childhood accident, the local understanding of the workings of heredity was fundamentally flawed - and one day a one-eyed pig was born in his village.

Putting two and two together, the magistrates held George responsible. Hoping to elicit a lenient response, he confessed - but when he discovered that

1) if he confessed, they'd hang him, and that
2) if he didn't confess they'd only be able to hang him if there were two witnesses to the crime

he withdrew his confession. Unfortunately the magistrates took the view that they had the two witnesses they needed: one was George himself (basis his earlier confession) and the other was the sow (obviously).

So they hanged him.

On 13 December 1991, at Newcastle Crown Court, animal rights campaigner Alan Cooper was cleared of committing an act of indecency with a 12-ft male bottle-nosed dolphin (called Freddie) off Ambie in Northumberland in 1990.

Peter Bloom, curator of the dolphinarium at "Flamingoland", N Yorks, had been one of the shore-side witnesses who complained to police about Mr Cooper's apparent behaviour with Freddie.

The case hinged on the non-sexual use that wild male dolphins make of their penises. The jury heard evidence from a number of marine biologists that marine mammals like Freddie used their dicks to explore their surroundings, to greet other creatures, and occasionally as "hooks" to tow along human divers when playing dolphin-type games.

Cleared, Mr Cooper said: "I will continue my mission to see that captive dolphins are returned to their natural home in the sea."

S: Daily Telegraph, 10 and 14 December 1991; The Independent, 11 and 14 December 1991.

(I seem to recall, although I cannot yet locate my source, that dolphins like to masturbate by rubbing themselves on turtles, something which is apparently a major cause of drowning in turtles and probably a great annoyance and embarrassment for the surviviors. More on this if I locate my source.)

Auberon Waugh commented on the Cooper case in his Telegraph column (14 Dec) with the words:

Quote:
"I never thought stimulating animals was an offence. The entire beef industry in this country is based on artificial insemination achieved by the masturbation of bulls."

Given that there have been amicable and complex dolphin-human interactions throughout most of recorded history, I can't help but wonder if delphinese dick-play is the origin of the "mermaid" legend.

Hittite law tablet, c. 1400 BCE:

Quote:
If a man does evil with a head of cattle, it is a capital crime and he shall be killed.
If a man does evil with a sheep, it is a capital crime and he shall be killed.
If anyone does evil with a pig, he shall die.
If a man does evil with a horse or mule, there shall be no punishment.
If an ox "leaps at" a man, the ox shall die but the man shall not die. A sheep may be proferred in the man's stead and they shall kill that.
If a pig leaps at a man, there shall be no punishment.

Interesting exemption for equuphiles, don't you think? Must be all those long, lonely raiding missions ...

Here's another account which sounds s u s p i c i o u s l y like the same incident. I wonder if Steve Jones checked his sources? I found this in History Laid Bare: Love, Sex and Perversity from the Ancient Etruscans to Lawrence of Arabia (BCA, 1995), which is also where the Hittite nugget in my previous came from.

This 1646 excerpt from the Records of New Haven Colony is prefaced by the following preamble from the 1995 editor.

"Governor Theophilus Eaton of New Haven colony (not yet merged into Connecticut) visited a barn to witness the trial-by-masturbation between a man and a pig. The man's name, improbably enough, was Thomas Hogg. And he stood accused of fathering a piglet that resembled him: it too was wall-eyed on the right side."

Quote:
The governor and deput, intending to examine him, caused to be led down to Mrs Lamberton's yard, where the swine were, then bid him scratt [fondle] the sow that had the monsters and immediately there appeared a working of lust in the sow, insomuch she poured out seed before them and then they asked what he thought of it, he said he saw a hand of God in it. Afterwards, he was bid to scratt another sow as he did the former but it was not moved at all, which Thomas Hogg acknowledged to br true but said he never had to do with the other sow.

Not quite sure about the apparent ejaculation by the (female) pig: not something I'd have thought possible. No idea of the, er, outcome of the case, either.

Oh, and how could we forget Catherine the Great's legendary fate?

http://www.snopes.com/risque/bestial/catherin.htm

Quote:
Claim: Catherine the Great was crushed to death while attempting to have intercourse with a horse.

Status: False.

Origins: According to legend, Catherine the Great died while attempting to engage in sexual intercourse with a horse. The truss holding her equine paramour broke, crushing Catherine to death beneath the poor beast.

Catherine the Great actually died alone, and she died of natural causes. On the morning of 5 November 1796, Catherine arose, drank coffee, and sat down to write. About three hours later her chamberlain, curious that he had not been summoned as usual, found her barely conscious on the floor of a closet adjacent to her bedroom. As her servant summoned help, Catherine lapsed into an unconsciousness from which she never awakened and died at 9:45 PM the next day. An autopsy conducted the next day determined the cause of death to be a cerebral hemorrhage.

Pornographic poetry and gossip about Catherine's excessive appetite for sex -- especially her alleged fondness for the barnyard variety -- circulated in Russia (and throughout Europe) during Catherine's lifetime. Exactly when and where the story about Catherine's death having been caused by a horse originated remains unknown, As one of her biographers wrote, the "implications of the horse story appear aimed at undercutting Catherine's claims to greatness, by aggressively asserting that her primary motivation was unbridled sex, the excesses of which resulted in her monstrous death."

So now you know.

Not sure how this could be turned into a question, though.

I'd dearly love to google it, but I'm not sure I want to deal with some of the sites that might pop up, if you'll pardon the expression.

On the grounds that Snopes looks safe enough, I had a look in there and did find one that claims to be true:
