Whilst in English, we have many special words for collective nouns, the chinese language is possibly the only one with many special words for singular nouns

Japanese has a similar thing -- counters for different classes of objects. Flat objects like sheets of paper, mechanical devices like household appliances, small animals like cats, people, etc. etc. Confusingly, the word for book is "hon" (本), but "hon" is also the counter for long narrow objects like bottles and train tracks. But "hon" is NOT the counter for books -- that would be "satsu" (冊). This has always tripped me up.

Refer you all to:

An Exaltation of Larks or the Venereal Game by James Lipton, Penguin Books 1977 ISBN 0140045368.

Includes very old usages, some unknowns and some modern usages.

A crash of rhinoceroses
A host of angels
A bevy of beauties
A kindle of kittens
A pod of seals
A skulk of foxes
A clutch of eggs
A murmuration of starlings
A riffraff of knaves

To which I might suggest:

A questioning of students
A reaction of chemists
A leap of faith-healers
A dilution of homeopaths
