Does anyone know the origin for why stage blood used to be called Kensington Gore? Was it first used in a theatre in Kensington?

Is it not simply a joke, based on the fact that blood is somewhat gory, and there's a street in London named Kensington Gore (upon which the Royal Albert Hall is located)?

Well I didn't know whether the word gore meant blood etc before the Kensington connotation

I expect so, as 'gore' has meant bloody since at least the sixteenth century.
