The fenicians had a rather unusual fertility-cult:

Young, wealthy women were placed in temples to work as prostitutes. When they became pregnant they proved themselves furtile and were given possibility to marry. All revenues went to the temple.

Were these priests pimps?
Or were these pimps priests?

If you followed the results of the poll, you might have learned that it was the Phoenicians who did this.

Phoenicia is written FeniciŽ in dutch (my native language).
Of course I should have checked the spelling first.
I do apologize.

And now those exams!

P.s.: If the fonetic rule is applied, this topic does resort under the "F-talk" category

You have to remember the times these Phoenicians lived in and look to the customs of their neighbours, they didn't exactly stand out as immoral for their time.

I thought temple prostitutes were a Mesopotamian idea originally, no?

It's fascinating how different the idea of sacred prostitution is from our modern attitudes!

And to answer the other question, yes I think you should be studying for you exams.

I think I should be drawing cartoon for a book on conflict management.

My exam went great by the way.

The class was 'Global political history of the Modern Times'
and the questions were:

The 'military revolution of the 19th century': What about it?

and

What were the British imperial power's characteristics?

(good questions to my opinion: important international issues AND broad topics, leaving the possibility to compose an answer with your own examples)

The professor was very friendly and even helped me out a bit.

Life is good!

You are right: keeping women in a temple and force them to remain virgins (I refer to the priestesses of Vesta but I think you might come up with more recent examples) isn't that humane either.
