Futurama is the sci-fi animation created by Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons.

It is also the show that contains the second funniest Fry in comedy, that being Philip J. Fry, the shows main protagonist.

The series was canncelled by FOX after it's forth season, but is returning as a straight-to-DVD film, similar to the similarly axed-then-revived Family Guy, and Comedy Central are bringing the TV series back in 2008.

Personally, I think Futurama is better than The Simpsons.

Who is the first funniest Fry in comedy then?

A lot of people say that Futurama is better than the Simpsons, but it does have some advantages over its older sibling. The main one is that Futurama only had four seasons whilst the Simpsons has had 18 so there has been more opportunity for Springfield to field some duff stories and become overly familiar.

Also, Futurama was able to spring fully formed from Groening's head and didn't have to undergo the early developmental period that the Simpsons had. The first few seasons of the Simpsons suffer greatly in comparison to later ones because the writers and animaters were still working out what they were goign to do with it.

The Simpsons is also crap because you have to wait so long to watch it on terrestrial TV in the UK. The Simpsons will never justify Sky's subscription charges.

But enough about the simpsons. Anyone got any futurama facts that might justify it getting onto the QI show?

I love futurama but don't really have any facts about it

Our Stephen of course!

Also, I found something quite interesting, and also quite disturbing about the show.

The character of Zapp Brannigan, who is voiced by Billy West (who also does the voices of Fry and the Professor) was originally meant to be performed by Phil Hartman, who had worked with Groening in The Simpsons providing the voices of Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz.

However, in May 28, 1998, Hartman's wife Brynn murdered him. She shot in with a revolver, through the temple, in he was asleep in his bedroom. As a result, West took the part and performed in the same style as Hartman.

Not really that relevant, but I'm rather lacking in animation trivia, but Hartman was the second regular voice artist in the cast of The Simpsons to die; Doris Grau, who voiced only one regular character, the canteen worker at the school, died quite early on. Unlike Hartman's characters (Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure) the character continued to appear after Grau's death but was never heard to speak again. This has been overturned in the most recent series, with one of the other voice cast providing a Grau-like voice for the character; it'll be sacrilege if they do the same thing with Hartman's characters.

It's also a fact that Hartman auditioned for the role of Zapp Branigan before his untimely death and would have got the role had it not been for that.
Anyway moving onto the greatness of Futurama and the declining quality of the Simpsons, I feel Futurama was (is) better because I feel they have a lot more material to work with whereas with the Simpsons, watching some more recent episodes you feel that they're running out of ideas and are so having to rely on zanier and stupider plots, however Futurama can rely on fantasy to deliver the plot as it's set 993 years in the future, when you use fantasy stuff in the Simpsons it just looks stupid, it used to work on trhe principle of 1 parts puns and wordplay, 1/2 a part zany humour, and 2 parts witty and creative humour, but now it seems to be reversed, with the focus on zany humour and ludicrous story lines for example:
Quote:
After Montgomery Burns old car gets teased by the Kids in Springfield Elementary, he tells Homer to pick him up a brand new Lamborgotti Fasterossa car in Italy. The rest of the family comes along with him as they fly over on Alitalia. After they pick up the car, they have a great time touring the country. They visit multiple cities such as Pompeii which is spelt Pompei (actually the correct spelling of the city in Italian) when they arrive. During the trip Homer and Bart manifest profound knowledge of the history of Italy, not to mention the Italian language. However, after a huge wheel of Mortadella lands on their car, they push it into a small Tuscan village nearby called Salsiccia, which means sausage in the Italian language. When they get there, they ask an elderly woman for help, and she tells them that the mayor speaks English. However, they find out the mayor is none other than Sideshow Bob. They are shocked to find him there, and for once, he feels the same way. He explains to them that after he attempted to kill Bart, he came to Italy to begin a new life. After a rough start, the natives warm up to him after he helped them crush grapes into wine (using his enormous feet). After that, they elected him mayor of their village. Bob no longer has any intention of killing Bart, and it is revealed that he has a wife and son, Francesca and Gino, and they don't know anything about his past life in America. Bob begs the Simpsons not to tell anyone, and they agree in order to have the car fixed.

The Simpsons enjoy spending time in the village, and they continue to keep Bob's past a secret. However, when Lisa gets drunk at a party, she starts to spout off about him being an attempted-murderer. He leads her away from the table, but as she stumbles backwards, she rips off his suit and everyone can see that underneath is his outfit from Springfield Prison. They find out the Bob is an attempted killer, and they take away his title as mayor. The Simpsons take off in the fixed car, and Bob swears vendetta on them.

After the family flees, Bob begins to follow them on a motorcycle. Homer drives into a ditch and ends up driving on ancient Roman ruins, and after they go off the end, the car ends up on top of Trajan's Column in the Roman Forum. Bob's wife meets up with him, and she tells him that they will kill the Simpsons together as a family (Gino, too).

Meanwhile, the Simpsons are wondering what they should do next. Lisa spots a bus with a poster advertising Krusty the Klown's performance in Pagliacci. They meet up with him at the Colosseum, and he puts them in as extras. However, Bob, Francesca and Gino find them and corner them in on the stage while Krusty, who went into a trap door, flees the stage, allowing Bob to perform the climax of Vesti la Giubba. Before they can kill them, though, Krusty's limo picks them up, who needs them to smuggle an ancient artifact back to American which they split amongst their persons. The Terwilligers walk away with evil smiles, no doubt plotting revenge.

Sorry as it's a bit long, (source Wikipedia)

Here is something quite interesting.

Quote:
Q: What did Fry in Futurama do, that Job in the Bible couldn't?
A: Move the stars

In the book of Job, God challenges Job and asks him lots of questions and tasks which he cannot do. One of them is:

Job 38:31-33 wrote:
"Can you hold back the movements of the stars? Are you able to restrain the Pleiades or Orion? Can you ensure the proper sequence of the seasons or guide the constellation of the Bear with her cubs across the heavens? Do you know the laws of the universe and how God rules the earth?

Job of course cannot do this. However, there is an episode of Futurama called Time Keeps on Slippin', where Fry moves the stars, and doing so writes a love note to Leela. However, before Leela reads it, she destroys the stars and the love note, meaning she has no idea of Fry's love for her.

I find the fact that the professor is Fry's nephew quite interesting, because he's so old!

This may not be that interesting.

Fry is also his own grandfather having made the beast with two backs with his grandmother.

Just like in the Simpsons, there are lots of "homage" moments to films, but Futurama has them in massive amounts. You can probably find lots of obscure references in each episode.

One thing I find really interesting is that the actress who voices Leela is the one who played the mother in "Married with Children" and there's an episode where she thinks she's found a male of her own species (before she finds out she's a mutant), they proceed to play out in the style of "Married with Children" which is quite hilarious.
