I don't suppose Amie is in any state to speak to us right now, but when she is - well done Hull!

To my surprise, there appears to be a pocket of 20 or so Hull City supporters in Rochester. Very happy fellows they were too.

did you no man united had other names in mind first like manchester celtic or manchester central but at the meeting an italian immmigrant called Luis Rocca said "gentleman why dont we call ourselves Manchester United"? the other directors liked the name and on the 26th april 1902 Manchester United was born

Well done to Doncaster Rovers too, conquerers of Leeds United at Wembley on Sunday.

Was that uttered through gritted teeth out of the corner of your mouth, Dave?

While we're on it though, also well done to Stockport County and indeed Exeter City.

And well done Pompey, who won the F.A. Cup.

(Hey, it's not like I get a chance to say this very often...)

:)

Good point! And while we're on it, and since they are one of the teams I vaguely support, so nearly well done to Queen of the South!

I haven't been a proper fan for a long time; supporting a team seems pointless these days. It's not like they are representing me in any way, when Ken Bates is the chairman and none of the players are from Leeds, is it? It's just an excuse for a bunch of blokes to go and shout, and get ripped off by another corporation in an extremely cynical fashion.

My friend and I made a pact on Sunday to no longer support our teams. He's a Villa fan, so can do so with somewhat more credibility than I;)

I'll stick to the rugby supporting*. Although I do still love watching football for the art of it.

*my rugby team has decided to be absolute pox of late too, unfortunately.

That's not normally the way things are done here, Blackpool Rule. Generally we give thanks for snippets of knowledge by sharing our own snippets.

Man Utd, by the way, started as Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Football Club and only became Manchester United after nearly closing due to bankruptcy but restarting and deciding to have a new name to go along with the new start.

Wiki entry for Man Utd.

I knew that the club was originally called Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, but not how the name "Manchester United" came into being.

There was a later club which did use the name Manchester Central; it applied for membership of the Football League in 1930 and again in 1931, but Manchester City and United together convinced the other members of the league not to vote them in. The club then folded within a couple of years.
