I can't find a specifically Welsh thread so I thought this might be a nice C connection.

I hear that the Welsh for 'microwave' is 'poppety-ping' - presumably an onomatopoeic word?

I have never seen "poppety-ping", but now that I say it aloud I realise that you probably heard "popty ping", which literally means "ping oven", and is certainly onomatopeic.

However, the standard word for the device is "meicrodon", which, like most European names for the thing, means, er, microwave.

Incidentally, I believe most things Welsh on this forum seem to get placed in "Celts".

I love 'popty ping' - much nicer than the rather boring 'meicrodon'.

Are we sure that the Welsh were Celts? I seem to remember reading that the whole concept of 'Celts' is rather suspect.

Stephen said that the Welsh have no word for the colour blue- i went to a welsh speaking school for a while when I was younger and was taught that the welsh for blue is "glas" with a circumflex (^) over the 'a'.

A good point well made, smegslayer.

I think this was the first error on the show ever pencilled in for a place in the semi-mythical QI Retr actions Special, back in a discussion starting at post 8653.

I think we should change the English word for microwave to popty-ping - so much nicer.

The history of the "no Welsh word for blue" gaffe is fully explored on the commentary track of the B Series DVD, available at all second-rate retailers and perhaps on Amazon.

I shall now call my microwave a popty-ping
