NATO’s main enemy used to be (not sure precisely when; will research further details) not the Soviets, but ... the Fantasians.

Here’s Alan Simpson MP, writing in the Morning Star, 24 March 07:

Quote:
“ ... reminded me of some of the exercises that NATO used to put on at its Brussels headquarters. MPs and guests would be invited to take part in an exercise that addressed the threats coming from an aggressive society called the Fantasians. The Fantasians occupied an island that had risen out of the sea in the middle of the Atlantic. Conveniently for the exercise, they came fully equipped with food, an army and a full nuclear arsenal.”

He goes on to explain how these exercises generally ended in nuclear obliteration on Friday afternoons, because the MPs had to hurry to catch their flights home:

Quote:
“There was a dash for the nuclear button and then the airport. The world was left in tatters, but at least the drinks trolley and the duty free offered some consolation.”

Yes, probably, but it is also so good that I think it should simply be declared true, by act of parliament.

When I was at Sandhurst (mid-'70s) the putative enemy was an army of men in fur hats, each with a half-eaten baby in one hand.

Wasting their food, as usual.

They obviously took seriously Swift's advice to the Irish.
