Q: Which US state buys more online pornography than any other?
K: California, Florida, New York, Washington D.C., Illinois, Michigan
A: Utah

According to a recent article in the Journal of Economic Perspectives, Utah consumes more online pornography than any other state in the USA.

This may seem surprising seeing as how Utah is the home of the Mormon church, 5.7% of every 1000 homes with broadband internet access in Utah buys online porn. The state which consumes the least online porn is Montana (Rich Hall's home state) with 1.92%.

It should be pointed out that the range of difference between each of the states is small. The 10th biggest consumer was West Virginia with 2.94%, while the 41st highest, Michigan consumed 2.32%.

The quite interesting thing about this study is that the states at the top of the list tend to be more Republican "Red states", with eight of the top ten voting for John McCain in the last election. Meanwhile, six of the bottom ten voted for Barack Obama.

Here is the top ten:

1) Utah - 5.47%
2) Alaska - 5.03%
3) Mississippi - 4.30%
4) Hawaii - 3.61%
5) Oklahoma - 3.21%
6) Arkansas - 3.12%
7) North Dakota - 3.05%
8) Louisiana - 3.01%
9) Florida - 3.01%
10) West Virignia - 2.94%

Here is the bottom ten:

41) Michigan - 2.32%
42) Wyoming - 2.29%
43) Connecticut - 2.28%
44) Delaware - 2.28%
45) New Jersey - 2.27%
46) Oregon - 2.21%
47) Ohio - 2.20%
48) Tennessee - 2.13%
49) Idaho - 1.98%
50) Montana - 1.92%

Perhaps the states at the bottom of the list are just 'skinflints' and don't pay for their porn.

In Bill Bailey's stage show 'Part Troll' he claims that the US spends more on porn than the entire debt of sub-Saharan Africa.
Is this true, and can he be told on the show if possible?

5.7% of every 1000 homes...

What does that mean? And why did it become 5.47% in the table? And am I being too picky? Perhaps I'll stick to the porn sites ;)

Right, well according to the first link in Ian's post, the retail sales of porn in the US in 2006 totalled $12,815,000,000.

The debt of Sub-Saharan Africa is massively bigger than that, though I don't have a figure to hand.

Well, according to the table, I believe the first column is those with subscriptions with some kind of adult service. The second column is that of those with an ordinary internent subscription and the third column is those with a broadband subscription.

Would it not also be 5.7% of every 10,000 homes? Or 5.7% of every 4,368,408 homes?

The wording chosen might be related to sample size; 57 out of 1000 people chose bone movies over cold showers.

Looking at the title of the thread I keep thinking the title of that little known Springsteen song Porn in the USA would have been better.

It wouldn't be 5.7% of any n number of homes. It's either 5.7% of homes or it's 57 of every 1000 homes.

i don't really find the red state/ blue state ratio there that surprising. everyone has sexual urges, but if you live in a more conservative environment, i.e. a red state, you're far more likely to supress them in your everyday life, either because your own attitudes tell you to do so or because you want to avoid scandal. only the urges still got to go somewhere, and hence when momma and the kids are in bed daddy indulges in some adulturous romance with playboy waxed babes on the net.
