Watch this space, I'm trying to get a handle on the fact that Elephants may have overtaken Hippos as the most dangerous animal in Africa. The figures are pretty impossible to find, but there have been a lot of nellies going mental in recent years.
It's nearly always maintained (especially by hunters and photographers) that the cape buffalo is the most dangerous mammal in Africa. They're very unpredictable, and quite often just come for you if they're even a little bit annoyed or surprised.
It is reputedly the most dangerous game animal, with the possible exception of the hippopotamus. But scientists highly dismiss this notion, reasoning that the aggression of a buffalo is a retaliation towards hunters who try to hunt down a wounded animals.
which seems reasonable. If you hurt it, it'll hurt you...
