I thought I recognised the smell of that one.

Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a sash, a rope; instead of well-dressed hair, baldness;

Isaiah 3:24

And, I might add:

"I sent plagues among you as I did to Egypt. I killed your young men with the sword, along with your captured horses. I filled your nostrils with the stench of your camps, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD.

Amos 4:10. I should think they jolly well wouldn't.

In Las Vegas, they routinely blow up a casino when it becomes too old (from their point of view) and build a new one on its place.

No, that's not funny at all.

Some scientists have just modelled and exploded a white dwarf star inside a monster computer simulation. They programmed in all the physics and then watched as the 720 computers churned over the sums for about 58,000 hours.

It did what our sun did when going nova - created a huge amount of iron that accreted into planets - most noticeably ours.

The Oregon Department of Transportation blew up a whale with dynamite in the 70s.

This is also NOT FUNNY

The reporter says:

The blast blasted blubber beyond all believable bounds

More transcripted bits of that video in case you can't be arsed with the link:

Our cameras stopped rolling immediately after the blast. The humor of the entire situation suddenly gave way to a run for survival as huge chunks of whale blubber fell everywhere. Pieces of meat passed high over our heads, while others were falling at our feet. The dunes were rapidly evacuated as spectators escaped both the falling debris and the overwhelming smell.

A parked car over a quarter of a mile from the blast site was the target of one large chunk, the passenger compartment literally smashed. Fortunately, no human was hit as badly as the car. However, everyone on the scene was covered with small particles of dead whale.

Here is where you can learn to express your fear of exploding elephants in many languages.

And here is where you will find a real story about an exploding elephant.

Here's a strangely beautiful image recently posted on wikipedia:

Larger version here:

It's a photograph of a nuclear explosion taken less than 1 millisecond after the detonation. The spikes emerging from the bottom are what's known as the "rope trick effect" caused by the heating, rapid vaporization and then expansion of mooring cables used to hold the nuclear device in place. More exlpanation here:
