Question: What should you do if you get exploding head syndrome?

“Exploding head syndrome is a rare condition characterized by a terrifying sense of explosive noise in the head, and it typically occurs within an hour or two after falling asleep. It is thought that incidents are related to periods of personal stress or when patients are particularly tired and overworked, however the condition is harmless.”

Some scientists have suggested that the noise may have something to do with a sudden movement of a middle ear component or a "springing open" of the eustachian tube. Others have suggested that it may be related to a minor seizure in the temporal lobe that contains the nerve cells for hearing.

Exploding head syndrome is accepted as being entirely benign condition, and is not caused by psychological disturbances – however it is very real and can be very frightening.

I actually get this very occasionally. I never did before i read about it though, so I reckon it's psychological. It's not frightening for me, just a loud bang as if someone's setting off a firework inside your head.

A fairly specialised use of the word 'benign', I would say.

Anyway, links to the sneezing-in-sunlight condition, ACHOO.
