I know this has been said but just to clarify it's usually barmy not balmy, although the free dictionary does add 'eccentric' as the third definition of balmy; maybe it's use in this sense is creeping in.

There are lots of streets close to Watford Station that I wouldn't fancy walking down in the dark!

I think the whole town's probably best avoided.

:P

Firstly, Hello everyone :)

Ok, a few strange street names I've seen on my travels:

Pocket Handkerchief Lane (Todwick, Rotherham)
Fanny Avenue (Killamarsh, Derbyshire)
Letsby Avenue (Sheffield. Home of the Police HQ!!!)
Shoulder of Mutton Hill (Kirkby in Ashfield, Notts)

And a few villages:

Wetwang (nr Driffield, East Riding of Yorkshire)
Land of Nod (East Riding of Yorkshire)
Botany Bay (Retford, Notts)

In a fan-translated manga I've been reading recently (you can't buy it) a crime scene was introduced as being on "17th Street, Birmingham, England". ;)

(I think we should all feel very grateful that we have proper street names in England.)

There's an area of Hull which has numbered avenues, and they go as high as 40th Avenue.

I think this may be the largest number used as a street name in the UK.

A little one-upmanship needed here, I think. Edmonton, AB has streets up to number 217.

So there! ;)

Indeed there is, suze - it's called North Hull Estate and it was built as a council estate. My first ex-sister-in-law's parents lived there and I remember it well.

In the Victoria, Australia, town of Ballarat, I saw and photographed a 'Pencilmark Lane' sign.

I wonder if the map was drawn first or the road was named first, or there was an accidental mark on the map which meant the road had to be built to match!
