Having contributed to this thread before, I am wondering quite why I hadn't commented previously - what's "balmy" about street names?

I would have used 'barmy' as the spelling, but I don't think it's a big deal.

I read that and instantly thought i had seen a road named like that somewhere.

And there it was, as I used to fix the ticket machines in that station. FYI, a very smelly road, due to the number of butchers and grocers selling "fresh" produce.

I grew up in Hull, and I think the street name came before the book.

I think the book by Winifred Holtby that you're thinking of was called South Riding, which I enjoyed both reading and watching the TV adaptation - it was a very thinly disguised picture of Hull. She also wrote rather a good book called Anlaby Wold.

Thanks for that. I remember trying to remember which compass reading it was and going with east. I knew it wasnt west...

I didnt see the series I just remember that it was being promoted. I don't know why I didn't see it. It would have been at least tried, as likely to be something I would watch

I just corrected the formatting (using my super-powers as moderator) to enable the BBCode and post it with the formatting you intended, Feralcat.

I noticed this one when I was looking for a venue in Peckham on Google Maps. The pub about halfway along has a very appropriate name...
