There's some niggling nag at the base of noggin that says that the pagoda wasn't invented in China at all, and that it was copied from Indian shrines (and this seems to be likely, given the migration of Buddhism in a similar direction).

However, there's also the claim culled from Palin's Himalaya that it was the Mongols wot invented it, even though their traditional Girs are more bungaloid. The Chinese then went on to develop the square and octagonal forms with which most people are familiar.

Wiki talks about Indian origins as well, but can anyone else find any corroboration? If so, it might make a useful klaxon question, seeing as virtually everything else seems to have been invented in China.
