While I was “doing” hedgepigs for Mitch’s book, I kept trying to find evidence that it isn’t only gypsies who used to eat them. I found strong hints that tiggywinkle used to be a common, rural wild meat (it would explain the name, apart from anything), but nothing really solid and explicit. Common sense says it must’ve been eaten: if something’s edible, country people will eat it, if only in hard times.

I suppose it’s too much to hope that the god of General Ignorance would make it so that gadjes used to bake ‘em in clay ... but at least if anyone can find a good source of non-Romany spine-swallowing we could have the makings of a fine Gen Ig eating question with a bread-and-milk supplementary (or vice versa).
