Q: What did American revolutionary hero Paul Revere call out on his legendary “midnight ride”?
F: “The British are coming!”
A: “The regulars are out!” or “The regulars are coming out!”
Revere wouldn’t have warned his neighbours that “The British” were coming, for the simple reason that he - and his neighbours - considered themselves British. A warning against “the British” would have been meaningless. Instead, he was warning them that the army - the regulars - was marching to arrest revolutionary leaders.
