150223.  Thu Feb 22, 2007 7:35 am The most elastic substance known to man is the stuff that holds blood clots together. Clots consist of a mesh of fibrin fibres, each roughly 1,000 times thinner than a human hair. They are the “stretchiest fibres in nature,” capable of stretching to almost three times their length and then springing back into shape. This is even more pliable than spider’s silk, “say scientists in North Carolina.” S: Western Daily Press, 4 Aug 06.

150228.  Thu Feb 22, 2007 7:41 am The internet seems unanimous that latex or natural rubber is the most elastic substance. That's not to say it's true of course.

150237.  Thu Feb 22, 2007 7:48 am This was reported as a new discovery, so presumably poor old latex has been demoted. As for the spiders, who served us for so long, they're nowhere now ...

150292.  Thu Feb 22, 2007 9:40 am The SI unit of elasticity is the pascal. Hooke's Law states that the amount by which a linear body is deformed by a force is directly proportional to that force. So it will take twice the force to stretch some latex 2 cm than it will to stretch it 1cm. Young's modulus relates the amount of deformation to the force applied and can be used to predict how much a force will deform an object. Some elastic substances (e.g. rubber) exhibit a phenomenon known as hysteresis. This is where the elastic forces don't respond immediately to the deformation of the material but instead lag someway behind. The consequence of this is that it takes more energy than it should to deform the substance. This excess energy is dissipated in the substance itself. This is why, if you stretch and relax a rubber band many times in a short space of time, it will heat up.

re: the blood clots thing, I wonder if we can get some of these?

Quote: These are candy scabs. They come on an adhesive bandage replica that sticks to skin and encloses a candy ‘scab’ for licking so you can keep some candy on you (hidden) for licking any time. We have officially reached the top (or is it bottom?) of the gross scale. These are due out on the market in September of this year. I am officially repulsed (but will probably buy some).
