In the USSR, condoms were among the hardest things to get: there was only one factory making them. What's more, over 50 percent of them were DELIBERATELY defective and would literally fall apart when in use - a primitive ruse of the rulers to boost the declining birth rates. It was not unusual to wear two and three of them at a time (to be in the safe side), but even that often didn't not stop them from breaking!

Mr Krause's team ( is developing a type of spray can into which the man inserts his penis first. At the push of a button it is then coated in a rubber condom.

However, Gray, my Catholic great-grandma had 22 pregnancies, of whom 12 were born alive (some miscarried, some stillborn) and eleven grew to adulthood, so nine doesn't sound so bad in that context.
