How lovely to know there are other fellow Scots out there (I'm one too)

I presume little snippets of information about areas in Scotland can be added to this thread?

:)

Nah, I don't do hoary old myths ... was thinking more along the lines of a few interesting and historical bits and pieces I've found out along the way, on my travels throughout this bonny country where I live ... thought some of you out there might find them 'quite interesting'

:)

Well, if that is the case, jockiness it is. I am currently tres smug about The National (being approx £190 better off as of Saturday evening thanks to a once a year punt down at Paddy Power!)

Congrats to you ... I presume this £190 no longer exists .... due to being spent over the weekend during your winning celebration?

LOL :)

In that case, feel free to enlighten the wider community about this northern-most outpost of the British Isles.

LOL....no, I am surprisingly sensible like that. I did not imbibe too much, but did take two lovely ladies to dinner on Sunday, which was nice.

Hurrah for TubewayAndy being 'Scotch' too (as the 'Merican's call us LOL)

Yes, some of our national figures don't seem to be very 'national' at all LOL

OK, Here goes with the first little taste of Scotland from my wanderings ...

Sumburgh Head Lighthouse, Sumburgh Head, Shetland Islands

The Shetland Isle's first lighthouse, Sumburgh Head, which is now a listed building, is located on the southern most tip of the Shetland mainland. The building dates from 1821 and was constructed by Robert Stevenson, grandfather of the famous author Robert Louis Stevenson.

The tower is 17 metres high, classified as a conical tower, which is painted white and the elevation is 91 metres. The range of the light is visible for 23 miles and gives three white flashes every thirty seconds.

It was automated in 1991 and the light is still fully operational. It is still an important active aid to navigation, plus the keepers houses surrounding the lighthouse have now been converted into self-catering accommodation.

The name Sumburgh Head (the area of cliffs where the lighthouse is situated) comes from the Old Norse name Dunrøstar høfdi, it means "The Head onto the Thunderous Noise", which supposedly refers to the noise of 'Sumburgh Roost', a thin silver band of small breaking waves that indicate the tidal stream south of Shetland. The stretch of water is locally called Da Roost.
