Has anybody mentioned that bananas walk? The stems fruit, and die back, while another stem grows up from slightly along the roots; so over a period of a few years a 'tree' may travel a couple of yards. Mind you, it's not fast enough to keep away from hunting snails.

I'm sure they have. They shoot out from things called suckers which create a whole new plant

There was a road sign near here recently which said "Caution - Heavy Plant Crossing". Is this what they were talking about?

I think I had a video of that when I was 17.

Sean Locke, to much scoffing from Fry et al, mentioned this in his appearance on the show in series 1, but managed to get it confirmed by the end of the filming. He mentioned that on plantations, the banana trees have to be given loads of space to between them in order to allow them to wander.

I don't believe they communicate by clicking, though.

cleverina clogs in right

Walk is to travel on foot unless bananas grow feet then they do not walk (it would be very difficult finding shoes if they did or socks for that matter)

If you're a furniture mover you might "walk" a chest of drawers, ie move it one corner at a time. This is using the word "walk" to mean "do something which is analogous to walking", which seems to me to cover what the banana does.

The more interesting question is what would happen if a walking banana plant came to a banana skin carelessly discarded on the path.

Probably have a funeral, thinking one of its mates was dead.

Bananas are used by some (can get a reference if you like) as a proof that God exists, because they appear to be perfectly adapted for human consumption.

Why's that? Becuse they go straight into your mouth? Does that mean carrots are aswell?

No, I see what they mean. The wrapping is perfect: tamper proof, easy to open, tells you by its appearance when the "best before" date has been passed, ergonomically perfect, distinctively shaped, works well as a single banana but fits together well as any pack number up to 6 or so, biodegradable, attractively coloured, and can be used as an excellent and traditional joke when you're finished with it.

yes, buy bananas today!

Bananas make nice milkshakes too... bung milk and banana in a blender and blitz for a few minutes - great stuff!
