The cockroach

I fear the meek shall not inherit the earth. The cockroach will! Not that the meek would ever grumble about it.

As disgusting as the roach may be, it is one of natures hardmen. We humans call it a day when exposed to around 800 rems of radiation. But some roach species can soldier on up to 105,000 rems. They can grow back lost limbs and for a short of time can even survive decapitation. They're not fussy when it comes to diet and will eat anything that's around, including each other. And when it comes to reproduction, rabbits are positively celebate compared to roaches. Viva la cucaracha!

The cockroach cannot survive 105,000 rems of radiation. according to the groundbreaking research of Drs Wharton and Wharton in 1959, it would be one of the first insects to die in the case of a nuclear war.

it can survive a dose of 20,000 rads while a fruit fly dies at a dose of 64,000 and a parasitic wasp would survive up to a 1.5 million dose !

Well slap my wrist and call me Wendy! Thanks for the correction. However, radiation aside, a roach could have a fruit fly any day.

Of course, if you'd bought the QI Book of General Ignorance (available at all good booksellers, and even some horrible ones), you'd've known that already as it's covered in some depth in that august tome.

They say that after a nuclear war there will be cockroaches and Cher ... clearly 'they' had no knowledge of the effects of radiation

Yeah, a post nuclear holocaust will simply have Cher, and anyone with the Cher gene. i have mixed feelings about the Cher gene, i wish i could survive a nuclear bomb, but i would be tainted by pure evil.
