Whenever a question on Pointless asks one to name countries, it is explained that a "country" is an independent state in membership of the United Nations - and for sure, Christmas Island is not one of those.

But I do struggle a bit with defining "country" in this way, because it requires one to accept that Greenland is not a country.
Greenland is a country, but it's dependent: it is a constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark. Problem?

That's the point suze is making. Greenland is not a member of the UN as an independent country, it is represented by Denmark. If this came up on Pointless it would not be accepted as a country.

Similarly, you have the question of England, Scotland and Wales, none of them have independent representation in the UN, so cannot be counted as countries on Pointless :)

On an episode of pointless a contestant answered Taipei as a capital city beginning with T. Taiwan is a country but not in the UN, the answer was rewarded with 100 points (incorect).

Ooh, that one is harsh!

I can't remember the exact circumstances, but Richard once stepped in on a comparable occasion and let the contestant have another go.

It is reported that Tony Abbott has threatened to deport asylum seekers who swear, spit or “irritate people”. Unsurprisingly the Australian PM is being accused of introducing a "climate of fear". The report did not specify whether this applied to the mainland only, but extended to PNG, Nauru and Christmas Island.

The current government has adopted a hardline policy towards asylum seekers.

Australia to compete in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest

Geneva, Switzerland -

Yes, you read that right! After a prominent place in the interval act of last year’s Eurovision Song Contest, Australia will compete in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest, to take place on 19, 21 and 23rd of May in Vienna, Austria. Just for once, and for many good reasons!

This year, the Eurovision Song Contest celebrates its 60th anniversary. To give the anniversary celebrations an extra dimension and to walk the talk on this year’s theme Building Bridges, the EBU and host broadcaster ORF invited Australia to compete in the Grand Final of the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest. This brings the total amount of represented countries to 40.

One of the many good reasons may be having to pay a fair share of the EBU and/or ORF bills: no semi-finales, but a guaranteed Grand Final invitation.

Who seems to have offended the Irish?

The few Australians I know don't like Abbot, so I guess it's not surprising he manages to gain the dislike of people in other countries...

Hold on just one cotton picking moment ...

Yes, the Irish have a reputation as a drinking nation, and that reputation is to some extent deserved. But for an Australian to call the Irish on their beer consumption ...?
