The greatest 24-hour precipitation total ever recorded on earth (73.6 in) was in France.

More specifically, in Réunion, an island in the Indian ocean which is one of 26 regions of France, as an overseas department.

The Chinese term for a French person is 法国人 (Fǎguórén). Although it literally means “law country person”, it must be noted that the source of the name is primarily phonetic. The Chinese word for “law” () merely stands for the /f/ sound in the the name “France”.

On this week's episode of BBC Radio 4's Just A Minute, Graham Norton is awarded a challenge of deviation against Gyles Brandreth on the grounds that the Tour Montparnasse is the tallest structure in Paris, not the Eiffel Tower. A woman in the audience backs him up. This prompted me to do a bit of a Google search. The Eiffel Tower most certainly IS the tallest structure in Paris, by quite a long way too: 324m tall, compared to the Tour Montparnasse's 210m. The Tour Montparnasse is however the tallest BUILDING in Paris. This will remain the case until the completion of several new projects in the La Defense region of Paris, where many of the city's tallest skyscrapers are. There are at least 6 buildings which will exceed the Tour Montparnasse's size, which include the Hermitage Plaza Buildings 1 and 2 (due to begin construction in 2010 and finished by 2014). These are both set to be 323m tall - 1 metre shorter than the Eiffel Tower. I can only suspect (without the QI-Elves behind me to ring the architect, Paris planning council etc.) that this is a deliberate decision so as to maintain the iconic tower's status as the tallest structure in the city. Thus, the trivia question will retain the same answer!

On March 31st 2011 following a referendum in 2009, the island of Mayotte became an Overseas Department of France. Its ownership is still disputed by the Comoros.

If you are able to walk, then you can walk from France to the Netherlands. Go to Saint Martin, the Friendly Island, and walk from Saint-Martin to Sint Maarten.

If you're able to walk, you could walk along the coast from Dunkirk.
