Nitpicking time.

Episode 3, about Dogs. There was a group of questions based on Latin names for animals - things like cygnus cygnus for swan and puffinus puffinus for the Manx shearwater.

When they came to oriolus oriolus (the golden oriole), Jeremy Clarkson seemed to think it was something to do with nipples. Stephen noted that this wasn't right, and said that the pigmented area around the nipple was the aureole, and spelled it out a-u-r.

Klaxons for Fry, I fear! The pigmented area around the nipple is in fact the areola - no "u" is present.

Indeedy, areola is a diminutive form of the Latin "area", meaning "length x breadth" (silly boy) whereas aureola is a diminutive of the same form of "aura" and tends to refer to the hazy cloud of saintliness / godliness surrounding important personages in religious art.

Also confusable are:
areoles - features of cacti from which spines grow and
alveoli - parts of the lungs where oxygen enters the bloodstream

It's not really his area of expertise....

Funny gag though.

It has just been pointed out to me that blokes have nipples. I knew that, honest. I was throwing in some shameful ignorance to remove the air of infallible genius that seems to surround me.
