Guinea pig meat is common food in South America. According to Wikipedia Peruvians consume an estimated 65 million Guinea pigs each year...

Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to find this fact out yourself, and report back here and tell us all.

A prize will be forthcoming, but not materially so.

A really big prize for the guinea pigs if they make him the first...

Extra hay and, oh, I don't know, a big cinema-style bag of maltesers.

Do guinea pigs like maltesers? We ought to know.

Guinea pig features front-center in Spanish paintings of The Last Supper.

I wonder if the Guinea Pig would also be an acceptable meal choice for a Catholic during Lent. After all, they are closely related to the capybara. Any thoughts?

Beavers were at one time declared by the Pope to be fish, and thus acceptable for food during Lent. I don't think guinea pigs were aquatic enough to qualify though.

I don't think anyone has died from a guinea pig, although my Sheltie one once decided that my hand was a piece of celery and persisted at tugging a bit of my skin. I ended up having to get my sister to try and pry his teeth apart to get them off - that wasn't a particularly comfortable experience!

He was a lovely guinea pig though! He and his partner used to squeak whenever we opened the fridge door.

Yes, this was mentioned in a QI episode, which Stephen also followed with mentioning that in South America, capybaras were also permitted.

As an owner of a total of about 10 guinea pigs over the past few years, I can say that lettuce certainly isn't bad for guinea pigs. Although due to the very high water content, it's important that it's not all they eat, because they need to get their vitamins and minerals from somewhere.

I read that lettuce was supposed to be bad for guinea pigs but as mine both died of old age and were keen lettuce eaters, this may be incorrect.

One of them was highly intelligent, responded to her name by squeaking, and knew three other words, all food-related. This particular guinea pig refused point blank to drink water, getting all her liquids from food. This was a bit of a nightmare as we lived in a small village in the middle of nowhere for some years, and fresh salad stuff could be almost unobtainable in the depths of winter.

(Just my second post, the first one was about the naming of guitars and now one about the intelligence of guinea pigs. Oh well, I'm sure cooler topics await me ;0)
