| I guess technically it does as a place but with no inhabitants any country in the world could easily set up in its place |

still, if this island was officially and contractually gifted to the german democratic republic in 1972, the greatest likelihood is that it is now part of the federal republic of germany because the unification treaty stated that all territories belonging to the gdr would merge with the federal republic and, furthermore, that the gdr would cease to exist as a sovereign entity. so technically that island can be either cuban or "west" german, but not part of the gdr because that no longer exists. some administrative challenge, though. which state and county should they add it to? what'll be the post code, licence plate and area code? ;-) should it be part of the eurozone? what about duty free status? will germanwings fly there for a fiver? YAY! germany has a caribbean presence! ;-)
:-)

rest assured, if it was awarded duty free status on the same basis as helgoland and gibraltar (outlying territory of an eu member state) it would very soon have both... i'm all for it actually, a caribbean helgoland, yay! :-D

Sorry, AFB, this is not entirely correct. The GDR did not join as a whole nor has there been a formal union between two states. This would have been possible but we chose for the simpler alternative.
Six reestablished federal states (Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Mecklenburg-West Pommerania, and reunified Berlin) joined the Federal Republic in accordance with the Grundgesetz (Basic Law (constitution)) which then was extended to include them (simple!).
Germany's (FRG, to be precise) constitution states now that there are no other parts of Germany, which existed outside of the unified territory, that had not acceded. Thus, Ernst-Thälmann-island can not be part of Germany. |

WHOOPS! sorry! so... which state would the island belong to then? it can't be the gdr because that did cease to exist when the fnl plus berlin joined the grundgesetz.
