News Flash

The record for the worlds oldest rodent has gone to the Naked Mole Rat.

In the final heat it came down to a straight battle between the n.m.rat and the porcupine.

The porcupine was the peoples favourite to win ‘on points’ but was narrowly beaten by the rat who survived to the ripe old age of 28.

A naked mole rat is not proof of 'intelligent design'

Nothing else is either, unsurprisingly.

One day last week I was giving a lecture, on the immune system as it happened, a subject on which I'm by no means a specialist, when it suddenly struck me very forcibly that while it was quite easy to see how the system might have evolved, by no stretch of the imagination could anyone rational look at it and decide it had been intelligently designed. I don't want to start a debate on the Evolution v. Intelligent Design argument, but I think Intelligent Design believers have some way to go before they can convincingly argue that any living thing shows evidence of intelligent design.

And even the ones that are often used to do that - eg the bombardier beetle - can be shown to have other explanations.

A naked mole rat is not capable of feeling pain.
Bearing this in mind; if the rural people, who now blow up frogs with straws, began shooting naked mole rats with air weapons, do you think it will it be possible for the RSPCA to prosecute them for cruelty

Oddly enough, there are people around who think it is. The Jesuit scholar Teilhard de Chardin, devoted much of his life to attempting to reconcile evolutionary theory with his Catholic faith. He wrote seven large volumes (in French), the gist of which was that God created life and directed its evolution with the purpose that living organisms would eventually evolve into God, although his prose is so French that you wouldn't realise that. The Pope thought this was a bit dangerous, so sent Teilhard to China with instructions to convert them to Catholicism. In his spare time, he studied fossil mole rats, in an inconclusive attempt to prove that evolution was directional.

Some years after his death, the discovery was made of the eusocial structure of mole rat communities, as outlined above. Very quickly, some people started arguing that the evolution of eusociality in such diverse groups as termites and mammals suggested that evolution must, in fact, be directed towards some grand goal and not, as neo-Darwinists believe, be essentially purposeless.

Well, I find that pretty hard to take, but it's interesting.

However it may be evidence for an alternative theory which I call "kinky design".

If you follow the link below you will see that they hold a tuba in their mouth. If we could teach them to play this tuba we really would have a kinky rhythm group.
