For a small country with a population of roughly 9,800 Nauru has managed to enter every Commonwealth Games since 1990. It has gained 27 medals altogether: 10 Gold, 6 Silver and 11 Bronze all in weightlifting. Its top weightlifter has been Marcus Stephen.

Nauru entered its first Olympics in 1996 but has yet to get a medal.

November 2011

President Stephen resigned with allegations of corruption being voiced and MPs elected Freddy Pitcher to succeed him.

A week later, Mr Pitcher was ousted by a no-confidence vote, and Mr Sprent Dabwido was elected as replacement president.

Some of the 9,800 inhabitants have voiced concern recently about Chinese links with the island given Australia allowing US marines to be based in Darwin.

In 2002 Nauru ditched links with Taiwan in favour of mainland China to return to Taiwan in 2005.

"The People's Republic of China maintains diplomatic relations with eight countries in Oceania: Australia, Fiji, the Federated States of Micronesia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu.

The Republic of China (Taiwan), by contrast, has diplomatic relations with the other six. The Pacific is an area of intense and continuous diplomatic competition between the PRC and the ROC, with several countries (Nauru, Kiribati, Vanuatu) having switched diplomatic support from one to the other at least once.

Both the PRC and the ROC provide development aid to their respective allies. China's also wants to establish a preeminent sphere of influence in the Pacific Islands." (Wiki)

The asylum seekers still dominate news from Nauru (now a favourite pointless answer on the BBC quiz). The Salvation Army has received much criticism for its role in Nauru.

Nauru together with Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga and the Solomon Islands compete in an Aussie Rules Oceana Cup.

Asylum seekers may finally start to have their cases processed in April 2013 according to Australian sources. Meanwhile Christmas Island is still providing a never ending supply of potential clients.

In an effort to improve the problematic water supply in Nauru, a solar powered desalination plant is being installed.

The Mail on Sunday visited Nauru and broke the news of the Royal birth - here are some extracts from the article:

On the tiny island of Nauru, they still talk about a visit the Queen made more than 30 years ago. But the momentous news of a new Royal baby has barely caused a ripple in the smallest nation in the Commonwealth. As The Mail on Sunday toured the once British-ruled island, it became clear many residents had no idea a future King had been born. But as we broke the news, the message for William and Kate was clear: ‘Bring George to see us!’

There are no newspapers on Nauru and only one television network, which is watched by just a few of the 11,000 inhabitants. The internet is notoriously unreliable. Over breakfast at the Sunset Cafe in Nauru’s central business district yesterday, most people were unaware of the Royal birth.

At a nearby market, we showed off a picture of the new infant.
Clothes stallholder Corina Deduna said: ‘I had no idea about this. He’s beautiful. I’d better get some Royal blue baby clothes with George on them.’

We also visited Nauru College, where a photo of the Queen and Prince Philip arriving in 1982 is still displayed on a noticeboard, and broke the news to a classroom of children and their teacher.
Student Azaria Jones, 15, said: ‘It would be the best thing if William and Kate could come here with baby George.’
George is a popular name in Nauru, but Atniza Batsiua, 15, suggested a Nauruan name to add to his others: Oyon.
‘It means strong,’ she explained. ‘I think Kate is very pretty and they all make a good family.’"

While it has been claimed that conditions for workers on Nauru appear to be worse than for the asylum seekers, the tiny island seems to be rapidly deteriorating into chaos.

Nauru has had a problem with its currency dealings for a long while. There now may be a solution. At present Australian dollars are the only legal tender in Nauru. Foreign exchange on the island is difficult and problematic.

Cash is the only form of payment accepted in Nauru. Credit/debit cards/cheques are not accepted.
