The Nauru government announced a port refurbishment programme to be completed in early 2011. The programme is financed with US$9 million of development aid received from Russia. The Nauru government claims this aid is not related to its recognising Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Nauru Update

Successive General Elections have left the single chamber Parliament split 9 - 9 (held in May and June 2010) with Marcus Stephen who was sworn in as president in December 2007 at loggerheads with his arch rival Ludwig Scotty who he replaced when he lost a no-confidence vote in the Pacific island's 18-member single-chamber parliament.

Stephen who has won Commonwealth medals for weightlifting was re-elected for a second term by parliament in November 2010, after another protracted phase of political deadlock.

The government continued to govern under a state of emergency until both sides agreed to form a coalition. Under the deal, former President Ludwig Scotty became speaker of parliament.

As president, Nauru's constitution stipulates that Mr Stephen will be both head of state and head of government on the island.

Nauru has no daily newspaper and as stated before has no capital city.

Nauru has no army but realistically who would want to invade the island? Australia has a "loose" agreement with the Nauru.

Hi Zebra. Just to say I appreciate your updates on Nauru. I have an interest in Nauru as my father had associations with it at one point in his life.

For a small country with a population of roughly 9,800 Nauru has managed to enter every Commonwealth Games since 1990. It has gained 27 medals altogether: 10 Gold, 6 Silver and 11 Bronze all in weightlifting. Its top weightlifter has been Marcus Stephen.

Nauru entered its first Olympics in 1996 but has yet to get a medal.

November 2011

President Stephen resigned with allegations of corruption being voiced and MPs elected Freddy Pitcher to succeed him.

A week later, Mr Pitcher was ousted by a no-confidence vote, and Mr Sprent Dabwido was elected as replacement president.

Some of the 9,800 inhabitants have voiced concern recently about Chinese links with the island given Australia allowing US marines to be based in Darwin.

In 2002 Nauru ditched links with Taiwan in favour of mainland China to return to Taiwan in 2005.

"The People's Republic of China maintains diplomatic relations with eight countries in Oceania: Australia, Fiji, the Federated States of Micronesia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu.

The Republic of China (Taiwan), by contrast, has diplomatic relations with the other six. The Pacific is an area of intense and continuous diplomatic competition between the PRC and the ROC, with several countries (Nauru, Kiribati, Vanuatu) having switched diplomatic support from one to the other at least once.

Both the PRC and the ROC provide development aid to their respective allies. China's also wants to establish a preeminent sphere of influence in the Pacific Islands." (Wiki)
