Algeria is named after the city of Algiers, whose name comes from the Arabic al-Jazair meaning 'the island' in reference to the small islands that once dotted the bay of Algiers.

The notorious TV station Al-Jazeera, based in Qatar, has exactly the same derivation. As well as meaning 'the island' al-Jazair is slang for 'the Arabian peninsula'.

You might need to expand a bit on the word 'notorious', Jack. I followed Al-Jazeera's English-language coverage of the Iraq war and found it very interesting, despite the fact that it was scrupulously balanced.

Possibly a Gen Ig issue (if widely known enough)... it's often thought that the French slang for Algerians is 'pied noir'. However, Algerian (Arab) immigrants to France were never called pied noir. This nickname only refers to people of European origin, born in the French North African colonies, especially Algiers (and settled there by the colonial French government, 1830-1962).

Although for all but 18 of those 130 years Algeria was considered part of metropolitan France, its pied-noir population was of predominantly non-French origin.

The name seems to have originated in West Africa and originally was applied to the French civil servants, who usually wore black leather shoes. The expression died out late in the 19th century but a few decades later applied to native Algerians of European stock.

One of the most famous pied noir was Albert Camus.

"Notorious" in the sense of honest, unbiased and free from outside control, you mean? This is indeed a new and interesting use of the word notorious with which I was not previously familiar.

I suppose you could argue that it was notorious from the sense of view that whenever we see footage from Al-Jazeera on our screens, it's always to report some new terrorist kidnapping.

More "notfortheus" than "notorious", perchance?

I so agree.

Watch Al-Jazeera's coverage of the bloodshed in Iraq then go to CNN for their take on the war.

Parallel universe or what ? ?

The French invasion of Algeria was revenge for the French consul being hit with a fly-whisk by the Turkish governor during a meeting regarding a thirty-year-old bill for some wheat.

Of course it was never a colony. Officially it was part of metropolitan France, much the same way Northern Ireland is to the UK. Hence the almighty fuss amongst the settlers when France tried to set it free.
