Ive been getting calls from various numbers saying they are HMRC and that I owe tax and will be arrested if I dont pay them. I looked online and found reports on this website on the number that rang me saying its a scam :

Apparently thousands of people have had these calls. HMRC are aware. I think its intriguing that whilst this scam has been around for years nothing is being done to stop it, and I cant help but wonder how many people have fallen for this

There are a lot of similar scams. On my side of the Atlantic there is which gives similar information.

I had a couple of those calls a while back. They called while I was out at work, so I just came home to a voicemail. I duly reported the number to the HMRC.

No, but if that robot rings to tell me about my Amazon Prime subscription, [press 1 to be defrauded], I may scream!

In Australia I stumbled upon this website for entering in possible dodgy numbers or those that come from call centres.

People sometimes call it back and will get a proper business, place etc.

I got a message from them on my answerphone - they claimed to be from the "Inland Revenue" rather than HMRC, which was a bit of a giveaway that it was a scam.

Seems like as good a place as any to mention this........

I haven't had anybody mention HMRC yet.

I get fairly constant calls from a variety of numbers, some with live humans and some with a recording (always the same voice on the recording):
This is your internet provider [no company name] and we're about to cut off your service...
This is BT and we're about to cut off your service... [never any other phone company]
This is your credit card provider [again, no name] and we've discovered fraud on your card...
This is Microsoft and someone has been hacking into your computer...

The Microsoft one is the oldest, and they seem to be phasing it out in favour of "internet" and "credit card".

In the past few weeks they've hit on a new one:
This is Amazon Prime and there's a problem with your account...

I've got these exact same types of calls...

I looked them up on and I couldn't figure out who they were coming from.

Is there any way to report them?

Hi jakiesmith and welcome to the forums. I know you can report email scams to your internet provider, but I"m honestly not sure about callers. It would be a waste of time anyway as they all seem to use spoofed numbers, so the number you report might belong to a perfectly innocent party.

It's not really worth reporting them. They're mostly calling from abroad, anyway, and there's nothing anyone can do about them here.

If you have the number they used, you can add it to reference websites like Who Calls Me (if it's not already on there).

The most useful thing is to use Caller ID and refuse to pick up unknown, unexpected numbers. My voicemail "greeting" says something like "I don't answer numbers I don't recognise, but feel free to leave a message and I'll get back to you." The automated calls sometimes record, but I've never had a human spammer bother to leave a message, and it's possible that they'll take me off their list if I never pick up.

My theory is that if you do answer, they (or their computer systems) go 'aha! This is a real number. Keep for future references/next person calling about insurance etc'.
