Trainline tells me there's no Avebury station. What's the nearest or most convenient (not necessarily the same thing) railway station? Being a non-driver, I can only get anywhere by train, and then taxi from the station to wherever the destination is.

Probably Swindon - see post 1387938.

It's about ten miles, but there are buses from Swindon to Avebury: see post 1387956. Car-pooling arrangements have also been suggested in post 1387957 and post 1387985.

Robbie I would be going past Swindon on the M4 to get to Avebury and would be very happy to transport you. Alternatively, if it's easier for you to get to Watford or Hemel Hempstead, I can pick you up from there as that's more or less where I'm starting from.

I could also pick you up. Preferably from Bristol Parkway, as it's less than a mile from my house, but I could easily detour to Swindon if that suits you better.

I would always recommend that as a lifestyle choice - it is far better to pass it and keep going...

Just to recap, then:

(1) Saturday 6th November has been proposed as the date, to be confirmed by 30th September. If you have any objections to that date, please post them before then.

(2) The venue is to be decided by the second week in October. At the moment, Avebury looks the most likely option.

Is there anyone who needs to book advance travel tickets before the middle of October?

A final reminder that the deadline for fixing the date is this Thursday (30th). So far, there have been no objections to Saturday 6th November.

I'm delighted to confirm that the next QI meet-up will be held on Saturday 6th November[*]. The venue is yet to be decided, but will most likely be Avebury in Wiltshire, if there are no objections in the next couple of weeks.

[*]Subject of course to fuel shortages, power cuts, Covid-19 restrictions, climate change protests, blizzards, plagues of locusts, etc., etc.

EDIT: I've changed the thread title to reflect this.

Avebury will be great. It shouldn't be too cold in early November, the pub is good and there's a visitor centre I think. There's also Silbury Hill and the West Kennet long barrow in the reasonably near vicinity.

Robbie - work out what would work best for you in terms of travel and let me know how I can help. I think you have the longest distance to come. I can't offer you a bed for the night unfortunately, since I'm not at home, but I can certainly drop you off at a Premier Inn in Watford or Hemel to catch a train the next day. I'm not sure what stations your train calls at.

Information about Avebury from the National Trust here:

https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/avebury

The manor house will be closed on 6 November but it looks as though all the other attractions are open.

Shame the Manor isn't open. I know a few people who volunteer there and it would have been nice for a meet up with them as well.
Still, there's a lot of other things in the village centre to nose at, as you say.

Yes it is a shame, but sadly that's the only date I can make.

Himself, probably not.
