A correction to the "Landmarks" episode--the last Civil War widow died 16 December 2020.

Hi Sarah and welcome to the forums. We love a good quibble so details please?

Seems hard to believe at first sight. The war ended 155 years ago, so even for a boy soldier who had died at an advanced age, after marrying a much younger woman, late in life, it would be a stretch. Unless the veteran was approaching his centenary, when he married a woman barely into her twenties, the maths doesn't seem to add up.

A simple Google gives this article.

Apparently she was 101 when she died, and was 19 in 1936 when she married a 91 year old veteran who she was taking care of.

So my guesstimate above wasn't far off...

I guess it wasn't a bad bet on her part to get a guaranteed pension for life, and for doing something (taking care of a 91 year old) she was already doing, though I see on the linked article that she never actually drew the pension.
