I'm late to this party, but just discovered that after Feb 8th WhatsApp, owned by FB, is going to require you to allow it to harvest all contact details from all your contacts regardless of whether those contacts are on FB or are WhatsApp users or not.

I am not happy about this. I realise that there is essentially no such thing as internet privacy if you use the internet, but what I consent to on my own behalf is one thing and what I am required to consent to on behalf of others is another thing completely.

I currently use WhatsApp with family members and with a few friends, but at the moment am thinking about changing to Signal, which doesn't seem to have the same policies and is a non-profit.

I will be interested to read what anybody else thinks about the issue of WhatsApp, about internet privacy generally, and about alternatives.

My problem is that even if Iíve got one contact who stays on WhatsApp, then Iím stuck with keeping it installed. And if thatís the case, I might as well just keep using it as I do now.

This is not much of an extension of their previous terms and conditions, and I resisted installing it for many years for precisely the reason Jenny gives.

I reluctantly gave in and installed it early in the first lockdown, having determined that everyone on my phone contacts list already used it anyway.

I'm tempted to delete it again now.

Is that legal? Other people's personal information that you hold with their consent would surely not be "in the public domain" - and any third party gaining that information must surely be in breach of numerous laws?

If you agree to their T&Cs, you give them permission to access that information. If you choose not to grant permission, then youíll need to stop using their software. Itís not like theyíre stealing data. Or is it?

The point is - that it isn't your data to give or withhold permission on - it's data about other people who could have no connection to those companies. Or have I misread this?

If you registered your WhatsApp account in the UK, Europe, the Middle East or Africa the new terms and conditions will make no difference to you as WhatsApp user data in those areas is not nor will not in the future be shared with Facebook.

That's useful to know, thanks Willie. I'll keep that in mind when the new Ts&Cs come through.

Sadly that doesn't help me a lot...

Seems like it would be worth creating an empty fake account for it to "harvest" from.

I keep facebook sequestered away on a browser that i only use for it, so they can't collect any other data on me other than that I give them through directly using their site.

Yes exactly I think the new update of WhatsApp is also as normal update.

Is there a thread on this forum covering online abuse?

No but you could use this one if you like, Prof, as it's sort of related.
