There is always the Pliny Is My Homeboy page on Facebook, for those of you who can bear to be there.

Yes, Awitt reported it on the Book of Faces and I saw it 5-6 hours later where it was still happening. And someone else too (I forget who it was).

Several others from the UK as you woke up and tried to log in, I presume, and/or saw my post first.

I didn't take note of my local time when it first happened, but it was the middle of the day here - it was fine all morning, then went down around lunchtime.

I've just heard on a midday news service that G---le services crashed overnight, affecting Docs, email etc. Related to this outage at all?

Apologies, I didn't log on to these forums yesterday, though I was busy dealing with the outage. It turns out to have been the hosting company being a bit too zealous about security and thinking that this wasn't a valid site because the main QI site is hosted elsewhere.

I've assured them that, whilst this site isn't as busy as it used to be, it is still being used. Hopefully they won't do that again :-S

Given that the research threads (invisible to most posters) are hosted on this site, and that the bulk of the research for the S series has now been done, they would have noticed a drop off in posting, I guess.

Also it's that time of year - Covid or not - where people stop checking certain things because they're getting ready for Christmas prep. and/or going away/are away.

There aren't many registered users in Aus, but there may be some lurkers who haven't posted as yet.

Another outage has just ended - this time it came up as a 403 Error.

That's three in six weeks.

I think we would be entitled to ask the Management to ask the hosting company what's going on, and what they're going to do about it.

Well, quite!

We may not pay to use these here forums, but the hosting company gets paid for hosting them.

If they are unsympathetic the only leverage consists of threats to move the site to another host though - is that practical?

Are we really convinced that a precise and personal application of extreme physical violence is completely out of the question?

Since those guys are in Pittsburgh and none of us are currently able to travel there, probably. Unfortunately.

This is the message I got from dr.bob at the last outage - I put it up on FB but non-FBers can read it here now we're back:

dr.bob wrote:
Just to let you know, the QI talk boards are currently down due to excess traffic from botnets. The hosting company reports:

"There are roughly 6,500 unique IP addresses trafficking the site at any
given time. We have attempted to block the most common IP ranges, but
doing so just brings new ranges in. At this time, the talk directory is
receiving roughly 1 million calls per hour."

They've deactivated the site for now until the traffic dies down. I think you're in touch with various users on Facebook so maybe you could let some of them know.
