Sylvester, the cat from the Looney Tunes cartoons with Tweety Bird, gets his name from the prehistoric species of European wildcat called Felis Silvestris. The species also inspired the name for Felix The Cat.

Felis silvestris ("cat of the forest") is still very much alive and kicking / biting / scratching in Europe (though it's very close to extinction here in the UK)
