Apologies if this has already been raised as the episode was first broadcast some time ago (but I've tried to search the forums and can't find any previous entries relating to this).

In this episode, Stephen asked how Mary Queen of Scots husband died, and then said he died in an explosion.

Well, she had three husbands, and none of them actually died in an explosion.

Although the house where her second husband, Lord Darnley, was staying was blown up he did not die in the explosion - he was found dead in the grounds apparently either strangled or smothered.

Good point, well made. Thanks for that.

I saw a recent book festival talk by Kate Williams about a history she's written of Mary Queen of Scots. She explained that the story is very hard to tell largely because so many of the men in Mary's life are called James, and so many of the women are called Mary.

Mary's dad was called James and her mother was Mary. Her son was James. When she returned from France to take the throne of Scotland, she travelled with her illegitimate half-brother, named James, and four ladies-in-waiting, all of whom were called Mary.

Oh, and the husband who was not-quite blown up was alleged to have been killed on the orders of the Earl of Bothwell who later kidnapped Mary and (possibly) forced her to marry him. His name? James Hepburn (obviously!)

Yes. And the fact that Mary's mother, Mary, also acted as Mary's regent doesn't help either...

You should check out the fate of James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell and Mary's third husband, as it is perhaps more gruesome than that of Lord Darnley.
