And the electoral college system that meant he got in, in 2016. Until then I'd really not taken much notice of that or what it means.

The same thing happened in 2000, when G W Bush was allegedly elected despite receiving fewer votes than Al Gore. Before that it hadn't happened since 1888 and so the idea that it was possible had rather faded from the public mind.

Similar things can happen in other countries. The British general election of February 1974 led to a Labour government without a majority. It took 301 seats to the Conservatives' 297, but the Conservatives actually got 200,000 more votes.

In the 1824 election John Quincy Adams got 10.44% less in the popular vote than Andrew Jackson but was still elected. Jackson got his turn the next time though.
