In London, a gay bar has stopped a massive erection.

The Backstreet, a leather bar in Mile End with the "strictest fetish dress code in Europe", was saved by Tower Hamlets council who ruled that it was, "an important community asset" and was "going the extra mile… to protect safe spaces for our diverse community". The bar in question was under threat from plans for a 12-storey residential tower in the area.

As a result, this gay leather bar prevented a massive new tower from being erected.

It is illegal in England and Wales for a petrol station to sell alcohol (for obvious reasons) (Section 176 Licensing Act 2003 if you really want to look it up). The rule is clear: no licence authorises the supply of alcohol on or from "premises used primarily as a garage", and a "garage" includes anywhere selling petrol or derv.

However, many petrol stations do sell booze, and councils frequently grant off-licences to them. How?

The petrol station chains argue that sales from the shop produce greater turnover than sales of petrol, so they are nor "primarily" used as a garage - they are a corner shop that happens to sell petrol too. Those companies have deeper pockets than the licensing authorities and threaten judicial review if they do not get what they want.

I had been led to believe that it depended on what was in the planing consent - if the planning consent explicitly included a convenience store rather than just a garage retail outlet then it could include off-license sales.

Tbh, it is very rare that I find a petrol station that doesn't have an attached convenience store. There was one just up the road from the previous crissdee Towers, but that was the only one I knew of for several miles in any direction, and I am not aware of one round here.
