Rilking

Not a lost art but unfashionable when one is despised for sounding educated, 'rilking' is throwing casually into conversation a very obscure quote. Crucially, it cannot be done in a way that sounds deliberate - it must be with a nonchalance that suggests that quoting Rilke or other fashionable or obscure philosophers is quite natural.

You have to learn a sample of quotations beforehand to toss them out, as knowledge increases autonomy both in the sense of Kant, and in that of Spinoza and his followers, as Isaiah Berlin would remind us.
