18. Lou Reed - Satellite of Love (1:25-1:40 but the levels are low)

19. David Bowie – Life On Mars? (1:53-2:25)

Now there's a thing. We have #18 as evidence that Mick Ronson could play the recorder, but most sources have it that what he played on #19 was in fact a mellotron.

But as always with songs recorded a long time ago by people who may not have been stone cold sober at all times, there are different versions of every story - and so nothing gets disqualified.

9. Theme from Play Away

Yes, it's a kids' TV theme, but it includes musicians as accomplished as Spike Heatlley (double bass) and the late George Chisholm (trombone). The LibDem peer Lady Benjamin of Beckenham (Floella Benjamin) appears in the video and may be one of those who shouts the final line, but who sings the lead?

We're reasonably sure that it's not the late Brian Cant. Shut your eyes, and is it Sir Anthony Baldrick-Robinson?

10. Joe South - Games people play

Joe South hailed from Atlanta GA and this song was a major hit back in '68, but he was pretty much a one hit wonder as a singer and sitar player. He made his living as a session bass player (notably Blonde on blonde) and as a songwriter (notably (I never promised you a) Rose garden).

14. Shannon - Let the Music Play

A personal favourite of Neil Tennant, apparently.

15. Heaven 17 -Play to Win

The band's appearance in this video (especially the ponytails) is an ironic, pro-socialist comment on the emerging 'yuppy' culture.

16. Theme from Play School

Well, we've already had the theme from Play Away.

17. Frank Zappa - Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar Some More

18. Frank Zappa - Return of the Son of Shut up 'n Play Yer Guitar

OK, so there are... 'similarities' between these two and between both of them and number 4.

19. Aerosmith - Just Push Play

20. Lenny Kravitz - Pay to Play

1. AC/DC - Touch Too Much

3. Dan Hill - Sometimes when we touch

If you're Canadian and my kind of age, you remember this song as the one that they played after the bar closed but before they turned the lights on.

Dan Hill's father Daniel G Hill was an important figure in Canada's civil rights movement in the 60s. Even though he had a prominent and openly black father, Dan Hill himself identified as white until around 2000.

4. Samantha Fox - Touch me (I want your body)

Samantha Fox was best known in Britain for taking her shirt off for The Sun, and it was on the back of that that she launched a music career. In Canada we hadn't seen her boobs and I'm sure we did notice that she couldn't sing, so I can only suppose that it was the guitar solo that propeled her song to #1 ...

13. Johnny Kidd and the Pirates - Please don't touch

British rock'n'roll was in its infancy in 1959, and the first acts to become prominent in the field were Cliff Richard and this guy. Frederick Heath aka Johnny Kidd was a Londoner, and died in a road accident at the age of 30 - but the song had an unexpected second life in 1980 when it was covered by Motörhead.

14. Diana Ross - Touch me in the morning

Back in '73, Diana Ross was one of the rather few black artists who had realised that the adult white market was where the money was. Your mom didn't turn the radio off if one of her songs came on, and your dad had seen her sparkly frocks and thought she was a bit classier than most of her rivals.

You thought that she should have left this song to someone like The Carpenters, and suspected that its airplay would be more on Radio 2 than Radio 1 (or the equivalent in your market) - but you couldn't deny that it was pretty well done.

No number included because it's the same song as 13 although the lyrics are radically different. In case you didn't know Eskimo Nell (NSFW) is a charming old tune beloved of rugby players back in the days when you could get away with loud off-key and off-colour* singing.

Motorhead and Girlschool (Headgirl) - Please Don't Touch

* unless the colour you have in mind is blue
