I have been trying to find the origins of playing gooseberry as in being a single person out with a couple. There are a number of completely unconnected theories on the web that I have found but wondered if there is a definitive explanation?
Many thanks

I'm not sure there is a definitive version. I found one here: https://www.nakedtranslations.com/en/2007/to-play-gooseberry-2/

What occurs to me is that a gooseberry is a fruit that is slightly prickly, and that might add to the feeling of discomfort that an unwanted third party to a tryst might bring.
