Woke up at 3am last night wondering if chameleons change colour voluntarily. 45 minutes of research and this is what I found:

Nobody is quite sure.

HOWEVER, it does seem that they actually change colour to signal to their companions rather than to blend into their surroundings. For example, when a male chameleon spots a rival, it will assert dominance by flashing its brightest colours. When they see an attractive lady chameleon, they'll display as many colours as possible to signal that they want to get it on. Human males can achieve a similar effect by buying one of every colour VK that the bar stocks.

So basically, this suggests that changing colour is a conscious decision.

Erm... Are you saying that chameleons are conscious?

I have always wondered what colour a chameleon would go if it was on a mirror, surrounded by mirrors, if we stick with the camouflage theory.
