When I was 18, my friend and I had a bit of fun for the summer and worked in a couple of pubs. This was 1973. I was a disaster as a barmaid. I couldn't remember people's drinks, or the total amount that was owed. I was also very bad at wrapping sandwiches in clingfilm. I didn't last long at this particular pub, (in those days bar staff had accommodation as well as a job). So I was given the push and my friend came with me even though she was pretty good at pulling pints and wrapping sandwiches. The point of this story is: on QI (series P: 7, picnics), we were told that the first wrapped sandwiches were in M&S in 1980. Wrong QI! Sandwiches were wrapped years before M&S did it!

Thinking about it, takeaway sandwiches were a well-known thing when I started work in '79, so various workmen's cafes must have been doing it for years before then. I suspect M&S were the first "branded" sarnies.

Yes I think you're right about sandwiches having a brand name. In which case QI should have said that.
