What do the stars of the European Union’s flag stand for?

Obvious yet wrong answer: the 12 members at the time the flag was created.

Interesting Answer: the stars were never intended to represent the member states – that was simply a coincidence. The actual European flag that we know today dates from 1953 and was the official flag of the Council of Europe. In fact there were never 12 members of the council when the flag was created – there were 15 members of the council. West Germany objected to the idea of one star per member state since the disputed territory of Saarland, which was not officially part of West Germany, would be entitled to a star. France objected to 14 stars, since that would imply absorption of Saarland into Germany. Italy objected that 13 was an unlucky number.

The stars themselves symbolise perfection. Twelve is meant to have no political meaning or connotations

Damn my schoolteachers for telling me the obvious answer! That's really interesting.

There are so many anomalies -- eg Israel in European footie and Song contests, but Lebanon, which is closer to Europe, not. But then at current progress, there is unlikely to be much left of Lebanon anyway, so I have probably just wasted several seconds of my life, and indeed the lives of our dear readers......

Isreal is in the song contest because they are members of Eurovision, as are Lebanon (there must be other reasone why they don't enter).

Eurovision is a bit bigger than europe.

How long before India have an entry?

One of my favourite facts comes from Europe.

In Liège, Belgium, the locals once tried to deliver their post, using cats. As you can imagine, it did not work.

The whole stars=states thing probably derives from the US flag.

As for cat-post...brilliant but flawed.

I think you'll find you just said Postman Pat is a black and white cat. EST is the conjugation of Etre (to be). The word you were looking for is ET which simply means AND.

I thank you.

Excusez-moi Monsieur Valise, but if you bother to read back on the thread a tad, you would notice that this was in response to a post about cats delivering mail - hence the whole porpoise of my post was to deliberately change the "et" to an "est".

Do you follow now?

If you're still stuck, try the following:

It's a shame that not everybody can be as astute as you, Signor Tas.
