Quorum sensing

Bacteria can communicate among themselves! that's quorum sensing.

Some bacteria use a lash-like appendage called flagella to touch/sense their environment or they sense the chemicals secreted by other bacteria and respond to it. QS control processes like bioluminescence, antibiotic production, biofilm formation.

Its a quite interesting read! This article is based on a research paper published on biofilms, how they visualized it for the first time. and how the architecture of these bacterial "cities" is influenced by their environment.

Fun fact:
99.9% of bacteria's default setting is to be in a group! very contrary to what was imagined(at least my imagination).
