(Continuation from post 1287598 - don't want to clog up the "please report any spam" thread any further.)

I wasn't around at the time of the "Great Purge" and I've been reading the thread where the explanation for the thread cull is given. I was struck by the following comment from dr. bob in post 627755:

Quote:
If a thread deserves to be kept, then I think it has to either meet some pretty extraordinary levels of interestingness or be directly relevant to the tv show/books/annuals in some way.

Were the aims of the forum very different back then? Apart from "Q Series Talk", very little that's posted here nowadays would seem to be directly relevant to the TV show or publications. If the same criteria were applied now we'd probably lose about 90% of the threads.

The forums were set up in the hope of supplying the elves with interesting material as well as providing interested viewers with a place to chat about the show and build a viewership. General Banter was always singled out just for chit-chat. The Green Room was specifically for comment on whatever current show was on TV, though with the rise of Dave and repeats it sometimes refers back to earlier shows. Quite Interestrings and the letter forums were always thought of as source material - not sure how much the elves use them that way, though I keep an eye on them and occasionally throw interesting stuff from them into the (hidden) forums open only to researchers. The research forums also provide a useful place for the research team to accumulate stuff towards whatever series is being researched. WFHIT has never been about research, but was a way of detaching potentially difficult subjects away from General Banter, which is intended to be more light-hearted.

If any of this sounds very organized, that's probably somewhat deceptive.

I think one main point in answering guy's question is that Internet space is cheaper now than it was in 2009.

Back in the day, our hosting provider used to get cross if we went over the amount of space allocated to us, or if we used too much of his bandwidth. Touching wood and all that, this seems no longer to happen.

That's a fair point, but I note that you yourself said in 2009 in
post 627560:

Quote:
the primary reason for the existence of these forums is and must remain that they enable members to put forward material which may one day feature in those shows and books.

Surely that can't be the case any more. How much of the material posted to these forums actually ends up in a TV show or book?

Incidentally, it turns out that Sophie.A transferred "Celebrity Baton Relay Changeling Raleigh" to another forum after the Great Purge:

https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/qigames/celebrity-baton-relay-changeling-raleigh-t4.html

The idea was apparently to create a chain of famous people by alternately changing first names and surnames (e.g. Tony Blair, Lionel Blair, Lionel Ritchie, Shane Ritchie, Shane McGowan, ...). Looks as though she transferred a few other games over as well:

It should be pointed out that there was no wholesale slaughter of contributors at that time, unlike other famous purges of which you may have heard.
Though a few may have stopped about then --samivel, Tas, gerontoius grumpius? Am I missing something?

I think Tas has stuck his head round the door once or twice.

When I joined in 2009, it seemed to me that the forum was somewhat more abuzz than it is today. I don't know how many active members we have now, but it seems to me that we had more then, and quite a few more specialists. Perhaps, in addition to what suze said above, there is less need to cull than formerly.

Long ago, I started a thread that I suppose was culled. It was based on my annoyance at the use of the words "There's nothing worse/better than..."
Any suggestions on where to put it, if I decide to resurrect the conversation? It's not really a game, or a list

Have there been any thread culls recently? I joined in 2013 and I'm not aware of any.

I'd have thought General Banter was fine.

@ Spud - it definitely was. I really miss those days. People like Neotenic, McKeonj, Hassan, Sadurian Mike, soup, etc. I'm glad I was there when the buzz was abuzz. :-)

Funny you mention Hassan, I was reminded of him a couple of weeks ago when we organised a "meet and learn about exotic pets" in my office. One of my favourite was a a Gecko from Afghanistan which was surprisingly soft, almost velvet like, and I remembered Hassan's pictures of the Egyptian Geckos in his house and his stories about them :)

Unbelievably, I still had the link on my favourites: https://morethanmumtaz.wordpress.com/2012/07/01/gecko-hooligans/

For anyone who hasn't seen it yet, I've attempted to revive the game in the thread starting at post 1287660. It would be very helpful to hear from anyone who can actually remember the rules!

Some of the longer running threads in General Banter get pruned from time to time. Threads like "How Was Your Day" do not contain every post which has ever been made to them.

Apart from spam, that's about it though.

I imagine the answer would be "very little" - but isn't that the way of all rationalist expression? A quick glance at almost any thread will show that the putative reason for a thread is rarely maintained, and that digression is the order of the day.

Not everything in life needs to have a purpose - and often the most interesting things come from letting people have free rein to go wherever their personal muse takes them.

But then, as I mentioned elsewhere, I am an extreme Darwinian - and I kind of like the whole idea of trying everything and seeing what works and what doesn't.
